About Dental Implants

A long lasting solution for missing teeth in Maidstone

Natural tooth compared to dental implant

Whilst dental implants are not entirely a new invention, having being discovered in archaeological digs where pieces of bone or shell were found to have been embedded in jawbones, it can safely be said that modern dental implantology started around the 1960s, after being accidentally discovered by a Swedish researcher; Per-Ingvar Brånemark.

In the past 50 years or so, dental implants have gone from being a fairly rudimentary piece of equipment to being a highly sophisticated method of replacing missing teeth.

At Kent Smile Studio, you can be assured of a safe and successful dental implant placement with our highly qualified implant dentists; all performed in a calm and welcoming environment.

Types of Dental Implants

Root form implants (endosseous implants) are made from titanium and act to mimic a natural tooth root. By doing so, they are held firmly in place by the jawbone through a process known as osseointegration, where the implant and the bone bond tightly.

Dental implants can be placed individually, or, where a number of teeth are missing, by using a process known as ‘All on 4’ or ‘Teeth In A Day’ which enables a full set of natural looking teeth to be fitted in a single visit at an affordable cost.

The Implant Procedure

Prior to an implant placement, a full consultation will be carried out at our Maidstone dental implant practice. During the consultation we will discuss the process with you, as well as listening to your expectations and answering any questions you may have.

Using advanced dental technology, CT scans, measurements and photographs will then be taken of your mouth so that accurate and precise implants can be manufactured in a dental laboratory specifically made for your needs.

To prepare for the implants, holes will be made in the jawbone for the implants to be placed into. This process will be done using a local anaesthetic and patients may be reassured to know that the bone contains relatively few nerves and is not, therefore especially uncomfortable. For those patients who are nervous, Sedation with an Anaesthetist is also an option.

Once the implants have been placed, they are allowed to bond with the bone for a period of time. A crown is then added to complete the restoration of the tooth.

All on 4

The All on 4 procedure which is used to replace a full arch of teeth, at Kent Smile Studio, is slightly different in that the rear implants are placed at a 45 degree angle for additional strength and stability.

These are then used to attach a fixed bridge which allows the patient to leave our Maidstone practice the same day with a new set of natural looking teeth.

We are always happy to discuss any aspects of the dental implant procedure with you and to answer any questions or concerns that you may raise.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are highly sophisticated and are made from titanium, one of the strongest materials available.

By ensuring that you are fully informed about their aftercare, and with regular check-ups, your dental implants may last you for many tens of years.
